As the Government allowance was still not received by
the 24th February I was unable to book my children's passages.
Bhagwan Singh left by the S.S. "Sirdhana" on that date.

On the 11th March I received the Government cheque for
I was uncertain what to do with it, and because of that
I did not pay it into my account at the bank for several days
until the 17th March. I then decided that I should retain the
whole amount as about the beginning of the second week in March I
had received a letter from my wife informing me that she was "with
child" and requesting me to come to India with the children before
the date on which she would give birth. I therefore decided that
I should go about some six or seven months later, but that I would
send on the children as early as possible as only the amah was
left to look after them all day while I was in the office, my
eldest daughter being in school at St. Mary's Convent.
In the hope of being able to arrange for passages for my
children, in case a friend or relation from our village was going
to India, I left my cheque for $1200 with Messrs. Thomas Cook & Son and did not withdraw it until they requested me to do so in a
letter dated the 23rd April 1932.
I would here mention that recovery of the unexpended
sum of $847.26 has at no time been jeopardised for ; a request for a statement of my credits in the banks would have been sufficient to prove that. Up to the date of my sailing for India I was expecting to have to pay out this sum at any moment for my children's
passages.
When my wife found that the children did not arrive with Bhagwan Singh, she became very uneasy in mind, knowing that they could not receive proper attention while I was in office all day. She therefore suddenly decided to return without completing the business for which she went to India, and she actually arrived in
Hong Kong about the middle of May, before I had any knowledge that
